10 Tips for Better 360° Panorama Photography

10 Tips for Better 360° Panorama Photography

Capturing high-quality 360° panoramas is essential for creating immersive virtual tours. Here are our top tips for getting professional results every time.

1. Use a Tripod with a Panoramic Head

A stable, level tripod is non-negotiable. A panoramic head ensures the camera rotates around the lens's nodal point, preventing parallax errors that cause stitching artifacts.

2. Shoot in Manual Mode

Lock your exposure settings. Auto mode will adjust between frames, causing visible brightness differences in the final panorama. Set your white balance manually too.

3. Overlap by 30-40%

Each frame should overlap with the next by at least 30%. This gives stitching software enough data to blend seamlessly. More overlap is better than less.

4. Use a Wide-Angle Lens

A lens in the 14-24mm range (full frame equivalent) reduces the number of shots needed and provides better coverage. Fisheye lenses work great but require specialized stitching.

5. Shoot During Golden Hour or Diffused Light

Harsh shadows from direct sunlight create difficult stitching conditions. Overcast days or golden hour provide even, flattering light throughout the space.

6. Remove Yourself from the Scene

Use a timer or remote trigger. If you must be present during some shots, position yourself behind the camera's current frame and clone yourself out in post-processing.

7. Clean the Space Before Shooting

Remove personal items, close toilet lids, straighten cushions. Small details matter enormously in 360° where viewers can look anywhere.

8. Bracket Your Exposures

For interiors with windows, HDR bracketing captures both the bright exterior and darker interior. Most stitching software can merge HDR panoramas automatically.

9. Check Your Nadir and Zenith

The floor directly below and ceiling directly above are often neglected. Use a nadir adapter or plan to patch these areas in post-production.

10. Post-Process Consistently

Apply the same color grading across all panoramas in a project. Consistency between rooms is what makes a virtual tour feel professional and immersive.

Follow these tips and your panoramas will look stunning in ArchVizs's 360° viewer.
